Artist Statement

I am a multidisciplinary artist based in Edinburgh with a background in theology, working primarily in painting. My practice explores the visual expression of the numinous—the felt presence of the divine—as understood within Western spiritual traditions. Rather than employing traditional religious iconography, I develop a personal visual language that arises through meditative reflection, internal inquiry, and intuitive response to scripture.

My current series is rooted in the story of the bronze serpent from the book of Kings. This work transcends its narrative surface to explore deeper spiritual structures such as archetype, type, and antitype—principles that emerge through sustained contemplation of biblical texts. These paintings investigate how meaning is layered, mirrored, and prophetically echoed within sacred literature, offering a space where image and mystery meet.

Drawing from symbolism, semi-abstraction, and elements of surrealism, I aim to construct a visual theology—one that invites reflection rather than asserts doctrine. Science, particularly quantum theory, and mythological systems also influence my symbolic vocabulary, enriching the spiritual dimensions of the work.

My upcoming series will turn inward, investigating the experience of spiritual death and rebirth through the lens of the body-soul-spirit triad. These paintings will offer visual meditations on transformation, longing, and grace—depicting inner metamorphosis as a sacred unfolding rather than a linear journey.

Ultimately, my work seeks to recover a spiritual posture often lost in secular discourse—a way of seeing, feeling, and knowing that resists language, yet resonates through image and symbol. It is an attempt to create spaces where transcendence can be reencountered.
